Veggie burger

A veggie burger is a delicious and hearty meat-free alternative to traditional burgers, made from a variety of plant-based ingredients such as beans, lentils, grains, vegetables, and spices. These patties are often combined with ingredients like breadcrumbs, eggs, or flaxseed to bind them together, and then grilled, baked, or pan-fried to perfection. Served in a bun with classic burger toppings such as lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, and condiments, veggie burgers offer a nutritious and flavorful option for vegetarians, vegans, and anyone looking to enjoy a healthy and satisfying meal.

Ingredients

For the burger patties:

  • 1 can 15 ounces black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup cooked quinoa or brown rice
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup grated carrots
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped bell pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed mixed with 6 tablespoons water flax egg or 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce or tamari
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup or BBQ sauce
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil for cooking

For serving:

  • Burger buns
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato slices
  • Pickles
  • Red onion slices
  • Avocado slices
  • Cheese optional
  • Condiments

Instructions

Prepare the Flax Egg (if using):

  • In a small bowl, combine the ground flaxseed with water. Stir well and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it thickens.

Prepare the Burger Mixture:

  • In a large bowl, mash the black beans with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth, leaving some chunks for texture.
  • Add the cooked quinoa (or brown rice), breadcrumbs, chopped onion, grated carrots, chopped bell pepper, minced garlic, flax egg (or regular egg), soy sauce, ketchup, cumin, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.

Form the Patties:

  • Divide the mixture into 4-6 equal portions and shape each portion into a patty. If the mixture is too wet, add a bit more breadcrumbs. If it’s too dry, add a splash of water or a bit more ketchup.

Cook the Patties:

  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and crispy on the outside and heated through.

Assemble the Veggie Burgers:

  • Toast the burger buns lightly if desired.
  • Place a cooked veggie patty on the bottom half of each bun.
  • Add your favorite toppings such as lettuce, tomato slices, pickles, red onion slices, avocado slices, and cheese if using.
  • Spread your choice of condiments on the top half of the bun.

Serve:

  • Place the top half of the bun over the toppings, press down gently, and serve immediately.
  • Enjoy your delicious and nutritious homemade veggie burger!
